James G. Nelligan
Jim is a probate attorney specializing in elder law, mental health and guardianship law.
After starting his own practice in 1986, Jim co-founded Metro Elder and Disability Law Associates (MEDLAW) in 1992. Prior to entering private practice, he served as a clerk with the New Hampshire Supreme Court, followed by a two-year term as an attorney with the Massachusetts Department of Social Services.
A recognized expert in guardianship law, Jim has authored numerous articles on medical treatment and guardianship issues. In addition, he represents three hospitals and several long-term care facilities on patient care issues and serves as a Special Assistant Attorney General for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
Jim has also lectured at numerous hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and professional conferences on the topics of guardianships and fiduciary representation.
Jim is a graduate of Suffolk University where he received his B.A. and M.S. in psychology. While working as a mental health clinician, he earned his J.D. from the New England School of Law, where he was Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review.
